Indian literature, ancient as well as modern presents a vast panorama of life in its myriad shades. Literature gets its raw material from life. Words are the arteries through which the bloodstream of ideas flow to coagulate into recognizable forms. Literature is also an expression of man’s creative self. In ancient times, Indian poets and dramatists gave a lyrical expression to the creative genius. Kalidasa has been the most illustrious writer in ancient Sanskrit literature. His best known works in Sanskrit are the Meghadutam, the Rtusamharam and the Abhijnanshakuntalam. His works contain a rare blend of the erotic and the spiritual. This present study on Shakuntalam is a modest effort to bring to light some important aspects of such a great work. In the study, the views of various critics and scholars have been pressed into service to provide a broader perspective on the play. This study also aims at decolonising the Indian mind by introducing the readers to the literary tradition of ancient Indian literature.
