Excerpts from Preface to the First Edition
Strugglers remind me of my struggle for job and I feel with them as I see my own image in them. I am well aware of the pain and humiliation which they feel or have to feel by remaining as they are. An inner urge has forced me to pen a handbook that will remain with them as a faithful and reliable companion in their struggle.
…The book is particularly designed with a view to keeping the requirement of the candidates preparing for the T.G.T. Recruitment Test. The whole syllabus has been covered so that the candidates may not feel the need of any other book. …
Excerpts from Preface
… Aspirants are demanding for a book which should be exclusively for the TGT as the pattern of questions in the examination has totally changed. It has become tricky, difficult and analytical. Here lies the relevance of this new book which is solely designed in keeping view of the new pattern of questions.
Questions, which are asked from the four authors—Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth and Galsworthy, are not direct. They test the aspirants’ analytical skill and understanding of the concepts. Hence, the questions from the standard History books of English Literature are designed to cope with the level of questions in the examination. The following History books of English Literature have been consulted in designing the questions:
1. Roland Carter and John McRae’s The Routledge History of Literature in English
2. David Daiches’ A Critical History of English Literature
3. Edward Albert’s History of English Literature
4. Hudson’s An Outline History of English Literature
5. William J. Long’s English Literature Its History And Its Significance
6. Arthur Compton-Rickett’s A History of English Literature
7. Legouis and Cazamian’s History of English Literature
8. The Oxford Companion to English Literature
Puzzling, analytical and conceptual questions have been designed from these books. Sources have been given along with the questions. …
