T.S. Eliot: HAMLET AND HIS PROBLEMS

An Analysis

by: S. Sulochana Rengachari

ISBN 978-81-7977-483-0

pp.: 36+4
Price: Rs. 30.00

The criticism of Thomas Stearns Eliot is essentially workshop criticism because it is a byproduct, a secondary result, of his creative work. He is considered the literary dictator of the twentieth century and a modern critic. “Hamlet and His Problems” was published in 1920, in his collection of essays on poetry and criticism, The sacred Wood. He was a strong influence on the School of New Criticism started by a group of American scholars during the earlier decades of the twentieth century. New Criticism stresses the dire need for textual analysis in criticism It is reminiscent of the adage “Trust the tale and not the teller”. Eliot observes in his seminal essay “Tradition and the Individual Talent”, that “honest criticism and sensitive appreciation” should be directed towards the text written by the writer and not the writer himself. He has followed the tenets of New Criticism in his essay “Hamlet and His Problems”. He dropped this composition from his collection of essays published after twentytwo years, in America. He explained that when he read the essay again he felt rather embarrassed because he opined that he had been inexperienced when he wrote it. However, the essay is quite significant as a piece of New Criticism.

Aspects of Linguistics

by: N.S. SAHU

ISBN 978-81-7977-458-8

pp.: 320

Price: Rs. 132.00

I am glad to say that this book is a companion to the linguistic science prepared for the use of the postgraduate students of the linguistic science in Indian universities.
To ensure a better inter-relationship and sequence of the various linguistic concepts and hypotheses, the chapters in the present revised edition have been more systematically reorganised. And, I’m sure, the readers would find the book more useful, relevant to enhance their understanding of the linguistic science.
Because many users of the earlier editions welcomed the Parts dealing with the controversial study of the linguistic science, the same have been retained with a slight reordering of the subsequent chapters of the third edition. As the science of linguistics has completely revamped our notion of the English language, this revised edition shall acquaint its readers with the problems at all levels of language : phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics (or semiology) syntax and language as a whole. These problems are, of course, common to all of the world linguistics, but the individual approaches made and treatments given to the various themes in the studies would perhaps be more inviting to the readers.
Over the past several years, linguistics has especially been occupied with questions of syntax and semantics. That is, linguistics explains these facts in different ways. As post-structuralism develops and explains from the late 1960s on, “deconstruction” appears to occupy an ever more distinctive place within this general movement. As a “mode” of textual theory and analysis, “deconstruction” subverts almost everything in the tradition, throwing to wind received ideas of the sign and language, the text the context, the author, the reader, the function of history, the work of interpretation and the forms of critical writing.
By the middle of 1970s, “semiotics” became a global discipline, a new megascience to encompass not only the fine arts but social sciences and several areas of the natural and physical sciences. As “Hermeneutics”, already cast as a minor branch of biblical studies, expanded its scope, and reached out to take in all manners and means of interpretative activity and theory. At certain point, “Hermeneutics” shares common interest and goals with semiotics, whereas semiotics remains structuralist at heart. It is not certain if hermeneutics preserves its methodological ties with “phenomenology”. That is, “semiotics” encompasses “hermeneutics” or vice-versa. And, in any case “deconstruction” could be absorbed by either or both of these transdisciplines. In chapter on “Semiology, Hermmeneutics, and Deconstruction”, I have attempted to highlight the relevance of these concepts as well.
Besides these, the reader will also find references to the work of many well-known linguists from other countries-an evidence to the significance of the exchange of ideas and to close affinities among various schools of science. And, despite innumerable inadequacies I’m quite optimistic to say that the book will surely help its reader to achieve his objectives.
From the PREFACE by the author.

An Analysis

The Nobel Laureate Thomas Stearns Eliot has been called the literary dictator of the twentieth century. His poetry is essentially modern, blending emotion and thought to establish unification of sensibility. The theme, the failure of communication, started even in his early poems. Students have generally found it a little difficult to understand Eliot’s poetry and hence this little book of analysis. The intricate echo of multiple sources is outstanding in the later poems but the concept can be identified even in this comparatively early poem. Besides touching on Eliot’s life and works, the variegated influences on the artist, both British and European have also been expounded. He grasped numerous ideas from great writers like Dante, T.E. Hulme, Irving Babbitt, George Santayana, Remy de Gourmont, Imagists and Symbolists.

Eliot, like Henry James presents a world of genteel society portrayed from inside. He also views it with significant discernment. He treats the rift between man and woman which indicates the greater theme of the individual’s isolation. The theme is all-encompassing in the poem commencing with the “patient etherized upon a table” and concluding with the mermaids who will not “sing to me.” The book answers several queries like Prufrock’s dilemma, comic elements, Prufrock’s delusion, themes, modernity, irony and sarcasm, Prufrock’s problems and so on.
