for UG—Semester 5, as per NEP–2020 based syllabus recommended for B.A. English for U.P. State Universities.
Classical Foundations and The History of English Literature is a thoughtfully designed textbook for undergraduate students of English for semester 5 (paper 1), following the National Education Policy (NEP–2020).
The book is divided into two main parts. The first focuses on Classical Western Literature, covering key themes such as the Epic, Birth of Tragedy, Greek and Roman dramatic traditions, and the philosophical and cultural background of ancient texts. Prescribed works like Plato’s Republic (Book VII), Homer’s Iliad (Book I), and Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex are explained with clarity, connecting them to the historical and philosophical questions of their time.
The second part explores the History of English Literature, guiding students through major literary movements and periods—from Chaucer and the Renaissance to Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Victorian literature, and the twentieth century. Each literary period is introduced with its social, political, and intellectual background, helping students see literature as part of a larger historical process.
Written in simple and accessible language, the book aims to support Indian students, particularly those from Hindi-speaking regions, in understanding the key literary concepts and critical developments of both Western Classical and English literary traditions.
